Vina Robles 2010 Red 4 Paso Robles

Wine Enthusiast 90 Points

There’s a robust heartiness to this Rhône-style blend that makes it perfect for drinking on cold nights with spicy barbecue or stew. Mainly Syrah and Petite Sirah, it’s rich in blackberry, bacon and black pepper flavors. Bone dry and moderate in alcohol, it represents great quality for the price, and it should be relatively easy to find, with nearly 12,000 cases produced. Editors Choice!”

Cambria 2010 Chardonnay Katherine's Vineyard

Wine Enthusiast 91 points

So elegant and sophisticated, this is a great value in California Chhardonnay. Although it's dry, it's rich and delicious in pineapples, pears, mangoes and honey, with an opulent overlay of sweet oak. The brisk acidity is balanced, and gets the mouth watering. Editor's Choice

Tikal 2010 Patriota Mendoza Red Wine

Wine Advocate 91 Points

The 2010 Patriota is a blend of 60% Malbec and 40% Bonarda aged for 12 months in French and American oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it sports an enticing nose of Asian spices, incense, lavender, plum, and blueberry. In the glass it opens t o reveal a ripe, plush, savory wine with no hard edges. Drink this well-balanced, lengthy wine over the next 5-6 years. It is also an outstanding value.

“The 2010 Tempranillo Ano Cedro saw 30% of the wine aged for 8 months in American oak. Notions of mineral, tar, black fruits, and violets lead to a flavorful, structured, layered Tempranillo with that will evolve for 1-2 years but can be approached now. It is an outstanding value.”

White Oak 2010 Chardonnay Estate Russian River

Beringer 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley

Wine Advocate 91 Points

Beringer’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon (Knights Valley) is endowed with serious minerality and tension. Firm tannins support an expressive core of dark red fruit, grilled herbs, asphalt and savory herbs, all of which come to life in a vibrant Cabernet Sauvignon long on personality and character. This is a serious wine for the money. Like so many wines in this vintage, it has tons of energy and vibrancy. If opened within the next few years, the 2010 is likely to require decanting to open up. The blend is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.

Wine Advocate 91 Points

“T he 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is a little subdued with moderate aromas of cassis, black olive and smoked game plus an appealing mushroomy / earthy character. Elegant and medium-bodied, the palate lends medium-high acid and firm fine tannins. The finish is long. Still a touch mute and tight, give this wine another 2-3 years in bottle and drink 2013-2022+.”

Dog Point Vineyard 2011 Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough

Wine Enthusiast 93 points

Complex on the nose and richly textured in the mouth, this wine delivers it all. Hints of struck flint and wild onion accent grapefruit aromas, while the flavors range easily from pink grapefruit and red currant to delicate herb shadings. It’s full without being too full, with a potent yet refreshing finish that seemingly lingers forever.

Famille Perrin 2010 Vinsobres Les Cornuds

Wine Spectator 91 Points #58 - Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2012

“Dense and layered, but very refined, with a violet note stitching the crushed black cherry, steeped blackberry and anise flavors together, while an iron note adds range to the finish. Drink now through 2018.”

Michel Gassier 2011 Nostre Pais Blanc Gostieres de Nimes

Wine Advocate 93 points

I know some readers will find it hard to believe, but the 2011 Nostre Pais Blanc’s aromas and rich, honeyed, full-bodied texture reminded me of the famous white Chateauneuf du Pape made by Beaucastel, which sells for three or more times the price. An amazing blend of 90% Grenache Blanc, 5% Roussanne and 5% Viognier aged six months in French oak, the Roussanne component jumps from the glass, offering notes of acacia flowers, honeysuckle, white peach, quince and pineapple.”

Ghost Pines 2010 Winemaker's Blend

Wine Advocate 90 Points

I loved the 2010 Red Blend (40% Sonoma, 28% Napa and 32% San Joaquin fruit), an intriguing blend of 42% Petite Sirah, 29% Zinfandel, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot. The biggest wine in Ghost Pines’ portfolio at 14.6% alcohol, it is a Rhone Ranger-like cuvee revealing notes of bouquet garni, roasted meats, licorice, lavender, black currants and black cherries. Full-bodied, fleshy and filled with personality, it should drink well for 1-2 years.

The 2009 boasts gorgeous inner perfume and luscious fruit, all supported by firm yet beautifully integrated tannins. Ponzi 2011 Pinot Gris Willamette Valley

Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Fragrant with floral notes, lemony fruit and hints of apricot, this is a tangy, textural take on Pinot Gris. Fermented in stainless steel and released young, it retains a bright and stylish profile right through a lingering finish, with a touch of sweetness.”

Tait 2010 Ball Buster Red Wine

Wine Advocate 90 Points

Blended of 77% Shiraz, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot, Tait’s 2010 The Ballbuster gives a very deep garnet purple color and pronounced notes of spiced blackberries, blueberry pie filling and stewed plums with hints of freshly cracked black pepper and fenugreek. Very full bodied and richly fruited, it has a good line of crisp acidity lending lift and a medium to firm level of velvety tannins, finishing long and peppery. Drink it now to 2016.

MacMurray Ranch 2009 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast

Wine Advocate 90 points

Even better is the outstanding 2009 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast, a blend of two-thirds barrel fermented and barrel aged with some aged in stainless steel tanks with wooden staves and the rest totally in stainless steel, all of which was put through malolactic fermentation. The idea of blending steel fermented juice with barrel fermented wines seems to have produced a freshness and vibrancy. Bright with notes of orange blossoms, spring flowers, honeysuckle and white peaches, this floral-styled, medium to full-bodied effort will please those looking for Chardonnays with less than 14% alcohol (this offering has 13.8%). Enjoy it over the next 1-2 years.”

Wine Advocate 90 Points

“The 2007 Calcura is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 20% Malbec aged in French oak for 12 months. Cedar, spice box, tobacco, violets, and assorted black fruits lead to an incipiently complex, nicely proportioned, lengthy offering that has enough underlying structure to evolve for 1-2 years but can be approached now. It will continue to provide pleasure through 2017+.”

Cuvaison 2010 Chardonnay Carneros

Wine Enthusiast 91 Points

The winery strikes a happy balance between richness and elegant austerity with this bone-dry offering. It’s minerally and reserved, offering intriguing hints of apricots and tropical fruits, with notes of buttered toast and smoky vanilla of new oak that many Chardonnay lovers crave.

Great price for a Cabernet this good. It’s packed with classic varietal flavors of blackberries, cassis, plums and cocoa. The tannins are rich and ripe, with an elegantly pure Napa Valley structure. Not an ager, so drink soon.

Zaca Mesa 2009 Viognier Santa Ynez Valley

Connoisseurs' Guide 90 points

Winemaker Eric Mohseni's predilection for light, briskly balanced whites shows first in this  wine's pert, white peach, quietly floral aromas and is reiterated fully  in the bright, energetic, acid-crisped flavors that follow. While it  never lacks for ripeness or for fullness on the palate, it is also alive  and vital all the way to the finish. A year in bottle will add a bit of depth.

Foxglove 2010 Chardonnay California (Varner)

Wine Advocate 90 points

The 2010 Chardonnay is one of the top values in California wine. It possesses tons of ripe, varietal fruit in a style that is quite rich but not heavy. Clean citrus and floral notes add freshness on the long finish. Lees stirring gives the wine much of its richness, while aging in steel helps maintain freshness. There is remarkable depth and textural finesse here, never mind a price that is mind-boggling for this level of quality. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014.

“Digs deep into the spice box, with nutmeg, clove and allspice flavors that perfectly frame the ripe, supple wild black cherry and raspberry notes. Comes together on a supple frame, with plenty of staying power on the finish. Drink now through 2015.”

Tamarack 2007 Merlot Columbia Valley

Wine Advocate 90 points

“The 2007 Merlot contains 11% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc aged for 12 months in 60% new oak, primarily American. Deep purple in color, it displays an attractive bouquet of sandalwood, Asian spices, incense, lavender, cassis, and black currant. Ripe, easy-going, and layered on the palate, this is a pleasure-bent offering that can be enjoyed now but has the stuffing to evolve for 1-2 years.”

Enjoy it over the next 1-2 years.

Easton 2010 Zinfandel Amador County

Wine Enthusiast 91 points & Wine Spectator 90 Points

“An excellent Zin--this has an invitingly soft floral nose, mountainous black-fruit flavors and structure and plenty of depth. This should age nicely over the next 3 - 5 years, but it is delicious to drink now, too.”

“Crisp and elegant, with floral cherry and spice aromas and lively, pure raspberry, white pepper and loam flavors that linger toward light tannins. Drink now through 2017.”

A big, dry, immature wine, firm in acids and tannins, whose strong black pepper notes add to its tart pungency. Underneath all that are immaculate blackberry and roasted meat flavors. Impressive for the price, and should develop bottle complexity over the next six years.

Chateau Ste. Michelle 2010 Sauvignon Blanc Horse Heaven Hills

Wine Advocate 90 points

The 2010 Sauvignon Blanc Horse Heaven  Vineyard (100% Sauvignon Blanc) was 30% barrel-fermented. Fresh herbs,  cut grass, citrus, and a hint of gooseberry inform the nose of a crisp,  refreshing, impeccably balanced Sauvignon that is an outstanding value  meant for drinking over the next 2-3.

“You could use this as a teaching tool for classic Sonoma County Zinfandel. It's full-bodied, dry and spicy, with briary flavors of wild berries, mocha, tobacco, leather and exotic spices. More importantly, it's absolutely delicious. The grapes come from Seghesio's best vineyards in the Alexander and Dry Creek valleys...An astonishing value.”

“The 2009 Il Bruciato is a gorgeous entry-level red from Antinori’s Bolgheri property. Black cherries, espresso, grilled herbs, crushed rocks and spices are some of the notes that emerge from this generous, expressive wine. Il Bruciato is Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. A clean, saline finish makes it impossible to resist a second taste. This shows tons of regional character, not to mention terrific personality. Smoked meat, game, and wild black and blue fruit aromas jump from the glass of this Cote-Rotie look-alike. Wine Spectator 91 points

“This fresh red is inviting and invigorating for its juicy black currant, plum and white pepper flavors, playing with zest against polished tannins and lively acidity. Drink now through 2019.”

Borsao 2009 Garnacha Tres Picos Campo De Borja

Wine Advocate 92 points

“The 2009 Tres Picos is a worthy successor to the string of splendid vintages which have preceded it. Heady black cherry and blackberry aromas, Asian spices, incense, and mineral notes lead to a dense, layered, rich old-vine Garnacha that over-delivers in a big way. A tasting of every vintage of Tres Picos ever produced (back to 2001) at the Bodega in January 2011 indicates that 8-10 years of pleasurable drinking is a reasonable expectation. However, this is a wine that is ready to drink on release.”

Travaglini 2005 Gattinara

“The 2005 Gattinara is a pretty, mid-weight Nebbiolo. Sweet cherries, tobacco, herbs and crushed flowers are some of the notes that emerge from this classy, refined red. The Gattinara is a somewhat fleeting, ethereal wine, but it has the freshness and firmness to age well for at least another decade. This entry-level Gattinara possesses tons of varietal character in a translucent, weightless expression that is typical of the appellation. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.” – Wine Advocate 90 Points

REGION: Piedmont, Italy.   APPELLATION: Gattinara  D.O.C.G.    GRAPES: Nebbiolo

Planeta 2009 Cerasuolo Di Vittoria Sicilia

Tasting Notes  -  Ruby colour with black cherry hues. The nose shows cherries dipped in freshly ground pepper. The palate is big and juicy with big cherries, spice, nutmeg, and very nice mouth feel. The finish is medium with that singular cherry component coming though.

Fontodi 2007 Chianti Classico

The 2007 Chianti Classico is fresh and perfumed as it bursts into the palate in a generous, silky expression of Sangiovese. This is an especially open vintage for the Chianti Classico that should drink well upon release. The balance, harmony and softness are all commendable. This is a fabulous effort from Fontodi. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.” – Wine Advocate 91 Points

REGION: Tuscany, Italy.   APPELLATION: Chianti Classico D.O.C.G      GRAPES: Sangiovese

Guido Porro 2009 Dolcetto d'Alba Vigna I'Pari

Reviews and notes on Guido Porro regularly refer to him as “under the radar”: the wines he makes are worthy of a stellar reputation, but he is too easygoing and unassuming to worry about whether the general wine-drinking public recognizes his name. He rarely bothers to send samples to wine writers. Guido is the fourth generation at an estate that has always been passed from father to son, and although fifth-generation Fabio hasn’t reached middle school, he is already showing a keen curiosity in the family business.  The varietal Dolcetto means “Little Sweet One”, and Porro’s is an especially forward, generous Dolcetto with excellent length and fine overall balance

The Burgans Albarino is a perennial Best Buy in these pages. The 2010 Burgans Albarino delivers notes of lemon, peach, mineral, and a hint of tropical fruit aromas. E. Guigal 2007 Cotes-Du-Rhone Rouge

Wine Advocate 90 points

The 2007 Cotes du Rhone has finally been released, and Guigal has made his finest Cotes du Rhone to date, all from purchased juice. He and his son told me they go through thousands of samples in order to come up with this cuvee, which is based on 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, and 10% Mourvedre, all aged in tank. A deep ruby/purple wine with lots of cassis, kirsch, pepper, and even an intriguing floral note, the wine is medium to full-bodied , silky smooth, and a truly delicious, hedonistic and intellectually satisfying wine that is a remarkable bargain. It should drink well for 2-4 years, as these wines can actually last.
