WA 91 Pts. - According to the Wine Advocate: The 2009 Headwaters is a gorgeous wine. Sweet red berries, flowers, licorice and mint are some of the notes that emerge from this silky, elegant blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32 % Merlot, 2 % Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017. Winemaker Notes - Coho Headwaters Napa Valley Red Wine is a "Bordeaux blend" of three varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon (66%); Merlot (32%); and 2% Petite Verdot. Most of the source vineyards for this wine are in the "Coombsville" area of the Napa Valley. This "terroir" provides deep and opaque red color, supple red cherry/wild berry and cassis fruit, and toasty oak on the nose, which then continues to deliver the same fruit tones and integrated oak nuances, with great complexity of flavors and power on the palate. The supple tannins offer a silky fine-grained texture to the wine and a lingering, fruit-forward finish. Rated 90+

a woodsy-brambly nose of dark berries, fig, and sweet spice.
on the palate a tart, red berry sweetness with leather, menthol, and mild chocolate on the finish and nice acidity.

Good now, may be Outstanding later
The 2007 vintage was #19 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2010, so our expectations were very high for this 2009. Though it is almost a shame to open these Headwaters so close to release, we threw caution to the wind and pulled out the decanter and gave it a shot. At first sample the nose was pleasantly floral, but we found the tannins simply had too firm a grasp of the fruit flavors that were trying to emerge. We then put it aside for an hour and gave it another try. Suddenly there was vanilla, cherry and violets bursting from the glass, and abundant dark berry fruit and oak notes were now dominating the tannins that were still firmly holding the wine together. This blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the Coombsville area of the Napa Valley, definitely needs time to breathe in its youth. With a few years in the cellar, this could easily develop into a spectacular rival of much more expensive Napa Bordeaux-blends. Highly recommended.
