#76 on WS Top 100 Wines of 2012 - WS 93 Pts - Winemaker Notes - The 2010 growing season began with heavy rainfall which resulted in vines flourishing. Grapes were all hand-picked and fermented separately by vineyard block, in five-ton, open-top tanks. After fermentation the wines were aged for nine months in new French oak barrels separately by vineyard block. The 2010 Austin Hope Syrah displays a deeply concentrated purple color with aromas of blueberry, cherry and hints of spice and wild herbs. Fresh, juicy berries, plum and red cherry emerge on the palate, balanced by notes of smoked meat and chocolate.

According to Robert Parker - Head and shoulders above its stablemate, Langoa Barton, proprietor Anthony Barton’s 2009 Leoville Barton is another massive, excruciatingly rich, tannic, potentially long-aged wine. Meant for consumers with old fashioned tastes, it boasts a dense opaque purple color as well as a bouquet of licorice, forest floor, unsmoked cigar tobacco and a hint of earth. The wine reveals tremendous denseness and richness, a broad, savory mouthfeel and elevated tannins in the finish. However, there is a sweetness to the tannins and no trace of bitterness and astringency, always a sign of a top vintage as well as fully mature grapes. Still a monolithic baby, this 2009 should be forgotten for at least a decade, and consumed over the next 30-50 years. Rated 90+

Bottled in August 2011. Tasting: The robe is a light yellow with yellow straw reflections. The disk is bright and limpid. The nose is open with autumn fruits flavors (quince, baked apples) Airing reveals honeyed and crystallized notes. The onset in the mouth is ample but remains fresh. In the middle mouth, a little bit of roundness delicately supported by the acidity of the wine.
