The list is based on four criteria: quality (represented by score); value (reflected by release price); availability (measured by case produced or imported); and an X-factor they call excitement. But no equation determines the final selections: Choices reflect the editors' judgment and passion about the wines tasted.

Wine Spectator Top 100

Altamura 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

WS 94 Pts. - #92 Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2012 - According to the Wine Spectator: Striking, rich and opulent, elegant and refined, with ripe, dense blackberry, melted black licorice and touches of cinnamon and baking spice. Grapes were all hand-picked and fermented separately by vineyard block, in five-ton, open-top tanks. After fermentation the wines were aged for nine months in new French oak barrels separately by vineyard block. The 2010 Austin Hope Syrah displays a deeply concentrated purple color with aromas of blueberry, cherry and hints of spice and wild herbs. Fresh, juicy berries, plum and red cherry emerge on the palate, balanced by notes of smoked meat and chocolate.

According to the Wine Spectator - This red exhibits pure, rich, ripe and concentrated layers of blackberry, boysenberry and black licorice, with tannins that give the flavors depth and traction. Palate - Delicate attack and a broad structure of fine tannins towards the mid palate and finish. A concentrated body, which will enable a long bottle ageing.

$19.95

Chateau Leoville Barton 2009 Saint-Julien

#6 - Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2012

WE 98 JS 96 WS 95 WA 93+ Pts - According to Wine Enthusiast - A major success of the vintage. The wine exhibits extreme richness of the fruit, with all its sweet blackberry flavors. It also has underlying firm structure, density and solid tannins. Bring in the acidity at the end, and this is both impressive and ready for long-term aging.

According to James Suckling - Very floral, with fresh mushrooms and currants on the nose. Full body, with powerful tannins, yet polished and refined. Lovely length. Vibrant acidity. Well structured. Try after 2018.

According to Wine Spectator - This is powerful Cabernet, with gutsy weight, but polished feel to the fresh plum, warm blackberry sauce, bittersweet ganache and roasted apple wood notes. Long and tarry through the finish, but still invigorating despite its heft. Will need some time to round fully into form. Best from 2017 through 2035. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 21,000 cases made.

According to Robert Parker - Head and shoulders above its stablemate, Langoa Barton, proprietor Anthony Barton’s 2009 Leoville Barton is another massive, excruciatingly rich, tannic, potentially long-aged wine. Meant for consumers with old fashioned tastes, it boasts a dense opaque purple color as well as a bouquet of licorice, forest floor, unsmoked cigar tobacco and a hint of earth. The wine reveals tremendous denseness and richness, a broad, savory mouthfeel and elevated tannins in the finish. However, there is a sweetness to the tannins and no trace of bitterness and astringency, always a sign of a top vintage as well as fully mature grapes. Still a monolithic baby, this 2009 should be forgotten for at least a decade, and consumed over the next 30-50 years. In the middle mouth, a little bit of roundness delicately supported by the acidity of the wine.

$15.95

Vina Eguia 2007 Rioja Reserva

WA: 92- WE: 92 and #18 Wine Enthusiast Top 100 According to the Wine Advocate: The 2007 Vina Eguia Reserva is picked from 30-year-old vines in Alavesa and sees 24 months in American oak. It has an attractive, very aromatic bouquet with dried herbs, leather, fennel and a touch of peppermint that is natural and very pure. The palate is very well-balanced with supple tannins, crisp acidity and a refined, mocha-tinged finish that is focused and persistent. This is another superbly crafted Rioja from Eguia.

$12.95

Wine Spectator Magazine - Dec. 31 2012 - Jan. 15 2013

The Top 100 - The most exciting wines of 2012

PLUS: WINE OF THE YEAR

Top Champagnes and Sparkling Wines - Holiday Party Menu - Vail Getaway: Ski, Eat, Drink

BOOKS FOR WINE LOVERS

$5.95

Wine Spectator Magazine - December 31 - January 15 2010

Top 100, Champagne, US Sparkling Wine, Port, New World Wine Experience.

$5.95

Wine Spectator Magazine - December 31st - January 15th

Top 100, Champagne, US Sparkling Wine, Top 100 Values, New York Wine Experience

$5.95

Wine Spectator Magazine - December 31st - January 15th, 2010

Top 100 of 2009, Champagne, U.S. Sparkling Wine, New York Wine Experience

$5.95
