Merlot (Mer-LOW) is one of the most widely used blending grapes, but has come into its own as an incredibly popular drinking wine. Similar to Cabernet Sauvignon in style but generally more lush and fruit forward. This varietal is not seen as collector’s wine but more a wine to be enjoyed in the now, carpe diem as they say. Merlot is a robust grape that can grow in a variety of soils conditions, and is very prominent in the Bordeaux region of France. The Merlot grape ripens earlier than most Cabernet grapes and features some similar aromas and flavors; such as currant and berries, but can also feature more floral and herbaceous notes like roses, and green olives.
