Piedmont Piedmonte, or ‘at the foot of the mountains’, is located at the base of the Alps and borders France and Switzerland and is known for first-class cuisine and viticulture. In the City of Alba, the notoriously hard to find White Truffle grows naturally, and the locations of these singular fungi are protected like a precious family secret. Here, Nebbiolo is King and is expressed beautifully in the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco, some of Italy’s most venerated and age-worthy wines. Other red varietals of note include Barbera and Dolcetto, grown in the regions of Alba and Asti. In Gavi, the white varietal Cortese produces food-friendly wines with citrus notes and bright acidity. Also worth exploring are the crowd-pleasing sweet wines of the area, most famously Moscato D’Asti and Brachetto D’Aqui.
