Best Australian Shiraz
At first I was confused on how Chapoutier’s name found its way onto an Australian Shiraz. My curiosity and the price point drove me to purchase a bottle. Upon opening this bottle I knew right away this wine was a far cry from the typical Australian Shiraz. The smell of pepper, eucalyptus and black fruit filled my nose. Once tasted, my first thought this must be a northern Rhone wine. This wine has balanced tannins, dark berry fruit, bacon fat and a hint of chocolate on the palate.

The best Shiraz I have ever had!
Michel Chapoutier is world renowned for his magnificent Hermitages. Anyone lucky enough to taste any of his Northern Rhone Syrah will be amazed by the precision, purity, softness and aromatic quality of these wines. Australia is knowned to produce a completely different kind of Syrah (big, heavy, jammy, generic) and fortunately for us, Chapoutier kept to his Rhone style! The Malakoff Shiraz is loaded with bacon fat, dark, soft and elegant with notes of cocoa powder on the palate. This wine is more reminiscent of a Croze-Hermitage than of any Shiraz I have ever had.
