Trentino Alto Adige Bordering Austria and Switzerland, Trentino-Alto Adige is Italy’s Northern-most wine producing region and is divided into two distinct areas: Trentino in the South is typified by traditional Italian Dialect and traditions while Alto Adige in the North is primarily a German and Austrian speaking population. The dichotomy of language in these distinct regions parallels the distinctive differences in cuisine. Trentino’s fare is comprised of polenta, pasta, and other Venetian-influenced cuisine, while the gastronomic traditions of Alto-Adige are Smoked Meats, wursts, cabbage, and dumpling soups. Both areas are known for and principally export White varietals such as Chardonnay, Traminer, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Bianco, however the bulk of production is Red Wine such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Lagrein, most of which is happily consumed by locals.
