Their Puligny holdings include premiers crus Les Folatières, Clos de la Garenne, Les Pucelles’ Champ Canet, and grands crus Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet. Other vineyards include Meursault La Pièce sous le Bois and red wines from Beaune, Volnay, Pommard and Santenay, most of which are sold in bulk.
At present 80% of the wines are sold on to extremely fortunate négociants in Beaune. However, the 20% that Paul retains and bottles himself is the absolute crème de la crème and quintessentially representative of Puligny at its best. As Clive Coates remarks, "Splendid wines… the only problem is that M. Pernot doesn't bottle enough of them himself to fill the demand for them."

The Pernots have very sizeable holdings in Puligny, most of which remains under contract to négociant houses such as Joseph Drouhin. Veteran Paul Pernot may still receive visitors but the work is now done by his sons Paul and Michel, now joined by a grandson, also Paul. I asked Paul senior if anything had changed at the domaine over the last 30 years. No. With their fabulous holdings, 20 hectares in all of which 15 are in the commune of Puligny, this could be the appellation’s outstanding domaine. Some new thinking on the viticultural side might be necessary first. The wines are weighty but inclined to the rustic.
