Wine Enthusiast, 2015 Winemaker of the Year - David Ramey, Ramey Wine Cellars
"Ramey spent his early career creating benchmark wines for California’s Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus Estate and Rudd Estate. At the estate he founded in 1996, Ramey Wine Cellars in Healdsburg, he has long championed traditional, artisanal winemaking techniques in his single-vineyard Chardonnays and Cabernets."
AG (92-94) IWC 91 WA (89-91) WS 90 Pts - According to Antonio Galloni - "Dark red cherries, plums, new leather, smoke and game explode from David Ramey's 2012 Syrah. Intense and voluptuous to the core, the 2012 should offer a long window of pure drinking pleasure. In 2012, the Syrah is pure raciness and intensity, especially next to the 2010s, which are much darker and more brooding. There is a lot to look forward to here."
According to International Wine Cellar - "Glass-staining ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark fruits, incense and mocha, with a peppery quality adding lift. On the palate, sweet blueberry and cherry liqueur flavors put on weight with air and show a smooth, velvety texture. The peppery note repeats on the spicy finish, which is framed by smooth, slow-building tannins. Quite impressive for an entry-level syrah bottling."
According to Robert Parker - "The 2012 Syrah Sonoma Coast (includes 6% Viognier) possesses a deep, rich, opaque ruby/purple color in addition to a lovely nose of Provencal herbs, lavender, black currants and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, long and rich, this impressive Syrah should drink well for 8-12 years."
According to Wine Enthusiast - Editor's Choice! - "Co-fermented with 5% Viognier, as is typical in all of this producer’s Syrahs, this wine offers a wild, feral intensity on the nose of black pepper, cigar box and leather. From there, it softens with well-defined layers of blueberry and blackberry, the tannins settled and structured, the wine finishing in dusty oak."
According to Wine Spectator - "Rich, with vivid dark berry, raspberry and crushed rock accents to the firm tannins. This captures the density of the grape yet remains light-footed, graceful and refined, ending with a clean, snappy finish. Drink now through 2023." 14.5% ABV.
