JS 95 Vinous 94 IWC 92 Pts, 93pts, Decanter - According to James Suckling - A solid Spottswoode with mint, currants, berries and flowers. Sweet tobacco and rose petals. Full body with silky tannins and a long, long finish. Tangy, energetic and lively. A wine with form, tension and beauty. This is classic California. 89% cabernet sauvignon, 8% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot. Better in 2016.
According to Antonio Galloni - Spottswoode's 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is beautiful, immediate and impeccable in its balance. The 2011 doesn’t have the layered, explosive personality of some of the iconic vintages, but it isn't too far off that level. Spottswoode fans should drink the 2011 relatively early, while some of the more powerful, structured vintages age. I will not be surprised if the 2011 turns out to be one of the jewels of this vintage. The medium-bodied structure argues for early drinking, but there is more than enough energy and acidity to suggest the 2011 will age gracefully for a number of years. Incidentally, the 2011 is the first Spottswoode Cabernet under 14% in a decade. Once again, the winemaking team led by Aron Weinkauf has done a fabulous job. The 2011 is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petite Verdot.
According to Stephen Tanzer - Medium ruby. Captivating aromas of crystallized blackberry, boysenberry, dark chocolate, violet and minerals. Rather backward but substantial for the vintage, with brambly dark berry and mineral flavors accented by a note of olive. Already offers lovely inner-mouth perfume but the serious tongue-coating tannins call for some patience. The black cherry finish avoids greenness. This vintage included some additional cabernet franc and petit verdot from acreage planted in 2006.
According to Robert Parker - A surprisingly strong effort, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits hints of black olives and tapenade as well as copious notes of creme de cassis, licorice and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied and atypically concentrated for a 2011, this is another tour de force from Spottswoode that boasts beautiful fruit and a long finish. It should drink well for 8-12 years. Kudos to the Novack family!
According to Decanter - Lean, delicate blackcurrant nose with a light but not unpleasant herbaceous tone. the palate has more dark fruits than the nose and is balanced by the ripe tannins. Very elegant and sleek; beautifully made. 13.9% ABV.
