93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: The 2012 Mountain Cuvée Block 19, a blend of 60% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah, is a brilliant wine at a realistic price. This is a wine of great intensity with an opaque purple color, sweet blackberry and blueberry fruit intermixed with licorice, espresso bean and a touch of chocolate. It’s ripe, full-bodied, savory, expansive and lush. Drink it over the next decade. The Hess Collection Winery on Mt. Veeder started off in the mid-1980s with some serious wines, but has been mired in the qualitative doldrums for the last decade or more. This is the best group of Hess Collection wines I’ve tasted in many a year.
90 points James Suckling: A soft and rich red with blackberry, chocolate and spice character. Full body, round tannins and a savory finish. Delicious now.
