90 Points Wine Spectator: "An elegant version, with Asian five-spice powder and cherry blossom notes wafting through flavors of black raspberry preserves, bresaola and cured tobacco. Long and supple, presenting a mineral-tinged finish. Carignano, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Drink now through 2021. 12,500 cases made."
Carignano, of Spanish origin and the blend’s predominant grape, has found its perfect terroir in the warm, well-exposed Sardinian terrain. The grapes come from vines grown in the Basso Sulcis region on calcareous clay and sand soil. Hand harvested whole bunches are destemmed, crushed and macerated on the skins for several days prior to fermentation in stainless steel vats. The wine is oak aged before blending and bottle aging.
Harvesting started a bit later than usual due to a few days of rain at the very beginning of September, though it didn’t affect significantly the quality’s grape. We started cutting the Merlot first, and continued with the Syrah, Cbt Franc and then Cbt Sauvignon; a few more days of rain in mid September forced to stop the harvesting operations; as a result, the Carignano was harvested later than usual as well, in October, as it needed to take some extra days of sunlight to reach the right ripening. Quality wise, we were able to make a good selection of grapes and the wine resulted to be excellent.
