Arrowood 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Speciale

WA 96 Pts. - We are so excited to be featuring this Library Selection from Arrowood Vineyards, the 2002 Reserve Speciale Cabernet was originally rated 94 by Robert Parker in 2005, and he revisited the wine this year and gave it 96 points! At this price it won't last long.

According to the Wine Advocate: Made from the estate’s finest fruit and aged 23 or more months in a combination of French and American oak, it comes from multiple sources in Sonoma, including the Monte Rosso Vineyard (now owned by Gallo). A wine of great stature and richness, it boasts an inky/ruby/purple color along with a stunning bouquet of loamy, dusty soil, lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, kirsch liqueur, licorice and barrique smells. Full-bodied and opulent, with some tannin still to be shed, it is a classic, All-American style of northern California Cabernet Sauvignon that is approaching middle adolescence. It has another 20-25 years of life left. Bravo! Richard Arrowood sold his winery to Kendall Jackson and thus is no longer responsible for the Arrowood wines. However, he did make the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Speciale, which is a fabulous effort. Rated 90+

Arrowood 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma Valley Monte Rosso Vineyard

WA 95Pts - According to the Wine Advocate: A real blockbuster, and one meant for 25-30 years of cellaring, is the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyard, made from 50-year-old vines. Treated like the Reserve Speciale, aged 30 months in oak prior to being bottled unfined and unfiltered, this shows off this hallowed terroir that is now owned by the Gallo family. A very full-bodied wine with notes of cedar and black cherry liqueur intermixed with creme de cassis, graphite, and loamy soil notes, the wine is deep, chewy, full-bodied, and intense. The tannins are high, but the fruit and concentration are more than adequate to match them. Give it 3-4 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 25-30+ years. This should be a brilliant wine down the road.Price: $59.95

Arrowood 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County

WE 92pts. - WA 90 pts - Winemaker Notes - The use of Sonoma Valley hillside vineyards gives structure to a particularly intense and concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon. This Cabernet has very rich aromas of cassis, black cherries, and plums with nuances of toasty oak in the background. On the palate, the wine shows its underlying depth of dark fruit. It is silky in texture with almost a sweet impression that lingers into a plethora of black fruits, cassis, and a nuance of dark chocolate on the finish. Rated 90+

According to the Wine Enthusiast: Shut down by hard tannins and utterly dry, this fine young Cabernet is simply not ready to drink. It’s very rich in blackberries, smoked meat and charred wood, with a finish that’s fine, long and sweet in ripe fruits. Should blossom after 2014 and hold for a number of years.

According to the Wine Advocate: The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma includes fruit from the famed Monte Rosso Vineyard. Aged in a combination of French and American oak for two years prior to being bottled unfined and unfiltered, it is an outstanding Cabernet boasting a deep ruby/purple color along with copious aromas of creme de cassis, graphite and spice box. Full-bodied with supple tannins, a generous, even corpulent mouthfeel and a long finish, it should drink well for a decade.

Arrowood 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County

WA 89 WS 89 IWC 89 Pts - According to Wine Advocate - The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon packs serious punch. Juicy dark berries, plums, raspberry jam, grilled herbs, tobacco, cedar and sweet spices jump from the glass. The 2009 opens up beautifully with a little air. The style remains hearty and at times a bit rustic, but there is nevertheless plenty to admire here. The 2009 is predominantly Sonoma Valley fruit (85%) and includes a dollop of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. This is an exceptional level of quality for a wine with a production level in excess of 10,000 cases. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018.

Arrowood 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County

IWC 89 Pts - According to Antonio Galloni - Savory herbs, tobacco, dried flowers and black fruit are some of the aromas and flavors that emerge from Arrowood's 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County. The savory notes typical of Sonoma Cabernets come through nicely in a mid-weight, accessibly priced wine to drink now and over the next handful of years.

According to Robert Parker - The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma was aged in a combination of American and French oak for 24 months. This fruity, dark ruby-colored Cabernet is somewhat monolithic compared to Sonoma’s top Cabernet Sauvignons, but offers a chunky, earthy, flavorful, savory style perfect for uncritical quaffing over the next 4-5 years.

Tasting Notes - Aromatics of dried cherries, dried figs, red plum, brown baking spices, vanilla and integrated oak. It has a nicely balanced palate with bright acidity, ripe fruit flavors of juicy raspberry and red currant. It has a long finish with round tannins and flavors of cocoa and black cherry.

August Briggs 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyards

Winemaker Notes - The Monte Rosso or ’Red Mountain’ vineyard is so named for its rich, red volcanic soils. Nestled in the majestic Mayacamas Mountain range, almost 1,000 feet above the Sonoma Valley floor, this steep and rugged mountain vineyard has a desirable western exposure that produce intense, powerful wines. It has a deep garnet color with inviting and complex aromas of oak, spice, and ripe fruit. On the palate, dense ripe fruit flavors of berries and plum mingle with vanilla, mocha and spice. Ample, but with well integrated tannins, the wine was barrel aged for 20 months (50% French, 50% American) prior to bottling. This wine is big and drinkable now, but will mellow and soften with time . Naturally, this is a steak wine - use accordingly. Less than 500 cases produced.Price: $40

Its dark ruby/plum color is followed by sweet aromas of black currants, smoke, damp earth, licorice, and spice. Medium-bodied and pure with silky tannins as well as a surprisingly long finish, it should drink well for 5-8 years. It has been at least twenty years since I have had a Napa Cabernet this good for under $15 a bottle. Winemaker Notes - We believe in the grape that put Napa Valley on the map at a price that won’t deplete your 401k. Deep ruby colored, our 2005 wine shines in the glass. Blueberry and plum nuances from the Syrah complement the dark cherry and black raspberry characteristics of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Supple texture and forward fruit flavors are balanced and enhanced by aging in French and American barrels. Oak aging provides a lingering note of toasted oak and vanilla while giving breadth and depth on the palate. The wine should continue to develop over the next 4-7 years.Price: $11.95

B Side 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley (Sebastiani)

WE 91pts. - According to the Wine Enthusiast: Holds its own in a tasting of Napa Cabs that cost, three, four, even five times as much. Made with a drop of Petite Sirah, it’s dry, firmly tannic and complex, with black currant, beef jerky, miso, pepper spice and smoky oak flavors. Best now and for a couple years. B Side Cabernet Sauvignon tells the story of the flip-side of Napa Valley. Nestled in rural areas and rolling hills along the eastern edge of the Valley, these vineyards are just a few miles from the glamorous, high-priced wineries featured along Highway 29. The eastern side of Napa Valley includes areas such as Pope Valley, Chiles Valley, Wooden Valley, Stags Leap District and lower Calistoga. Vines in these areas are grown in thin volcanic soils, which yield smaller, more concentrated fruit, producing Bordeaux-style Cabernet Sauvignons with classic berry and cassis flavors. The 2007 vintage of our B Side Cabernet Sauvignon shows excellent fruit and balance without sacrificing tannin, backbone, and potential for aging. A blend of two different Napa benchland vineyards, this dark, garnet red Cabernet opens with wild strawberry and boysenberry aromas, a touch of caramelized oak, bittersweet chocolate, and hints of charcoal from the rich and multifaceted Napa Valley soils. It is textbook Napa Cab on the palate, with an essence of black current and dark red raspberry contrasting with firm structure and dusty tannins on the finish. Aged for over two years on French oak, this wine has both the fruit necessary for immediate enjoyment, and the balance and depth to improve with age. A family gathering with beef brisket and oven roasted potatoes would be the perfect accompaniment to this excellent Cabernet. A short rib stew makes a natural pairing, and for something lighter, try a mushroom cream sauce with thyme over fettuccini to pair with the savory flavors in this vintage. ... Rated 90+Price: $21.95
