CC 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

WS 87 - Winemaker Notes - One sip and you will be hailing it like one of those yellow numbers on 5th Ave at rush hour. In 2007 we have found ourselves with the unique opportunity to work with one of the world’s most special vineyards and wineries. We are not allowed to tell you exactly who, but we can say it comes from the world-class hillsides above one of those quaint little towns along highway 29 in the Napa. The wine is first class, serious and special cabernet AND it costs a very very small fraction of what the much fancier wines of the neighborhood cost. In fact, we dare you – put it up against your favorite cabernet, put it up against Opus One (no, this is not from Opus) and you decide which is better. We feel confident we’ll crush it!

Cedar Knoll 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

This textured Cabernet shows bold fruit and depth with blackberry, graphite, cedar spice, cassis and licorice.

The Palmazes bought a forgotten stone winery, a fine old house badly in need of renovation, and acres of land that had once produced fine Napa wines. The little valley had been the site of Cedar Knoll Vineyard and Winery, founded in 1881 by Henry Hagen, one of Napa Valley's pioneer winemakers.

Henry Hagen produced wines that garnered many awards, including a silver medal at the Paris Exposition of 1889. During that era, Cedar Knoll was one of Napa's premier wineries. The vineyards survived the Wine Country’s phylloxera infestation in the 1890s, but Prohibition was fatal.

The winery fell into disrepair and the vineyards lay fallow for nearly eighty years. Today, the vineyards are burgeoning, the restored Hagen house is a family home again, and the winery has been reinvented.

Chappellet 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill

WA 96 CG 95 WE 94 Pts - According to the Wine Advocate - The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is a wine that should only be bought by the very patient. An infant today, the 2009 is all about promise and potential. The wine possesses stunning depth and concentration, with fabulous balance and tons of personality. The only thing it needs is time. Chappellet 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature

WA 92 Pts. - According to the Wine Advocate: The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is a dark, mysterious beauty endowed with considerable depth and richness. Mocha, chocolate, spices and plums fuse together gracefully as this soft, supple wine takes shape in the glass. I very much like the immediacy of the 2010. Only a little bit of persistence is missing on the finish, but not enough to materially detract from what is a gorgeous bottle of wine. For Napa Valley standards, this is about as good as it gets for the money. The blend is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 7% Malbec and 4% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.

Chappellet 2010 Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

WA 95 IWC 93 WS 92 JS 92 Pts - According to Wine Advocate - Grilled herbs, cedar, spices and pencil shavings emerge as the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill sits in the glass. There is a wonderful immediacy to the 2010 that is totally compelling. A wine that conquers the soul and intellect, Chappellet’s 2010 Pritchard Hill is a wonderful introduction to the wines of these hillside vineyards in St. Helena. As good as the 2010 is today, my sense is that the wine will be even better in another few years. The 2010 is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Malbec and 10% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.

According to International Wine Cellar - Bright medium ruby. Aromas of blackberry, black cherry, licorice, dark chocolate, mocha and sexy oak show an almost porty ripeness. Dense, broad, lush and sweet, with highly concentrated black raspberry, mineral, mocha and licorice flavors lifted by a violet topnote. Finishes with impressive mounting length and big, dusty but sweet oak-driven tannins. In a rather full-blown style for the year, but I'm not complaining.

According to Wine Spectator - Shows a potent edge of pencil lead and shavings to its firm dried berry, sage and savory notes. Young and tight, but persistent, gaining depth and firmness on the finish. Best from 2014 through 2024.

According to James Suckling - Wonderful aromas of lead pencil, bark, spice and currant follow through to a full body, with silky tannins and a juicy finish. Very pretty young Napa cab that makes you want to open and drink now. Delicate finish. Rated 90+

Charles Krug 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Yountville

Winemaker Notes - Our Peter Mondavi Family Cabernet Sauvignon is supple and harmonious Aromas of dark chocolate, orange peel and roasted chestnuts combine with wild berries, coffee and peanut brittle flavors. The 2007 season began dry, about 60% of normal precipitation with some very cold days and single-digit night time temperatures around the New Year holiday. Temperatures were warmer than normal as winter continued into spring with resulting earlier budding, bloom and set in the vineyards across all varieties. The summer months remained cool, with few days topping 100degrees except for a brief heat spike around Labor Day. Clusters, as well as individual berries, were notably smaller in all varieties due to the dry season.

Charles Krug 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Winery Tasting Notes - Our Peter Mondavi Family Cabernet Sauvignon provokes aromas of anise and pomegranate that melds with smoky overtones. On the palate, flavors of ripe red berries and hickory bring out hints of nutmeg. Well balanced oak gives way to smooth, rich finish for this exceptional wine. The 2008 growing season saw widespread frost damage and challenging summer conditions which reduced yields and produced a lighter than average vintage. A dry spring and a lengthy late April frost, the coldest in more than three decades, were followed by three odd heat waves before mid July rain in some paces, and high winds, all during critical bloom period. As a result, grapes were smaller, but more concentrated. Despite a 'crazy weather year', wines produced in this season were well-structured, elegant and full of flavor.

Chasing Lions 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast

Winemaker's Notes - I had the pleasure and honor to grow up in a multi generational farming family. In 1974 at the age of five, I began to follow my Grandfather every day on the family farm as he tended to his ranch. Over the years he taught me a lot about farming - but more importantly, a lot about life. Then one day in my late teens, he told me it was time to get off the ranch and “go chase lions”.

I never asked what he meant by that because something inside me already knew. It’s been 20 years now since he passed. I have been Chasing Lions ever since.

Chateau Montelena 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley The Montelena Estate

WA (93-95)pts. - The powerful, concentrated 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (14.3% alcohol) exhibits aromas of black currant jam, tar, smoke, and forest floor. This opulent, rich 2003, while less flamboyant than the extroverted 2002, is deep, chewy, pure, and well-delineated. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025+. At the end of my tastings, Bo Barrett opened a 1986 Montelena (rated 94), and it is still incredibly young, rich, vibrant, and full-bodied. It is a terrific expression of Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon made by a master. It appears to have another 20-25 years of aging potential.

Chateau Montelena 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Napa 1.5L Magnum

WA 94pts. - IWC 93pts. - According to the Wine Advocate: The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, all from their old vineyards in Calistoga. This is a dense, ruby/purple-tinged wine with full body, and despite the softness of the general vintage, Montelena has plenty of structure. Like nearly every vintage of their top Cabernet Sauvignon, it will last for 25 or more years. The wine has sweet tannin in a broad, flavorful, concentrated style with plenty of black currant, licorice, and spice. The wine is beautifully textured, slightly more forward than most Montelena Cabernets tend to be. It is another beauty from probably the most consistent winery for Cabernet Sauvignon over the last three decades... Rated 90+

Chateau Montelena 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

WA 90pts. - Winemaker Notes - The color of the wine is a deep garnet red in the glass, like nice dark claret. The nose is raspberry, bramble, cassis, some earth and the characteristic Cabernet black pepper spice. There is a bit more cedar and pepper up front with the softer Merlot aromas in the background. It is a wine with more classic cassis and terroir, rather than the dominant jammy fruit we see in warmer vintages. The palate is soft, with warm cassis, lots of red berry, and great varietal character. It has a very polished and supple tannin structure, highlighting the complexity that results from the blend of the different vineyards. The judicious use of 20% new oak barrels also gives a soft warmth and depth to the wine’s basic character without being obvious. In the end it is a wine and a vintage where our more traditional winemaking techniques and low yields combine to give an elegant, Old World style wine. You can enjoy this one right out of the gate!

Chateau Montelena 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Tasting Notes - Dark rich ruby in color, this wine offers rich, complex aromas of ripe dark cherry, sweet chocolate, cinnamon, pie spice, and leather, with top notes of rose and forest floor. In the mouth this wine makes a full soft round entry, after which the acid builds nicely to make it very juicy and inviting. Loads of fine grain tannin completes the mouthfeel, with berry patch, fruit stand flavors dominating. Nice notes of clove and toasted oak round out the tremendous long finish that will keep you coming back for more. This is a very well balanced wine that will age well and pair beautifully with a wide array of foods.

IWC 93pts WA 91pts Winemaker Notes - Dark and powerful in the glass with great density and saturation, this wine grabs your attention from the first glance. Luscious and rich on the nose with great depth, we find top notes of violets, cassis, and rich dark cherry, all riding over a base of warm leather, cocoa, wet stone and molasses. The palate opens with red raspberry and blackcurrants before building to mouth-filling ripe cherry, a beautiful acid balance, and round rich velvety tannins. The incredible intensity of the palate fades slowly leaving a finish of dried fruits and hints of clove with remarkable weight and tremendous persistence.... Rated 90+

Chateau Montelena 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Napa Valley

WA 94pts+ , WE 92 Pts - According to Robert Parker - A great wine in the making, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (just under 10,000 cases produced) possesses a fragrant bouquet of sweet black currants, crushed rocks, earth and background oak. Full-bodied and dense, with Montelena’s typical power, tannin and reserved nature, this is a big, rich, formidably endowed red that requires 4-5 years of cellaring. That in itself is atypical of this exuberant, flamboyant vintage. Given this cuvee’s past history, this 2007 should age for 30+ years. rated 90+

Winemaker Notes - The deep intensity of the red/purple garnet color hints at the great extraction of this 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet. The nose is layered with ripe plum, blackberry, dried black currant, rich cocoa. In addition there are undertones of earth, leather, and vanilla, along with a light rose top note. Bright acid and fresh red fruit flavors open the palate, leading the way to, big ripe cherry mid-palate, and mellow barrel tones. Rich and mouth filling with good layers, good persistence and depth culminating in a nice spicy ripe fruit finish. This Cabernet shows excellent mouthfeel and weight throughout, thanks to the beautiful structure of firm fine-grain tannin.-ts20

WA 91 Pts - Winemaker Notes - This Cabernet is deep ruby in color with massive extraction and great density. The nose opens with huge intensity, great depth, and lots of layers. Big fruit aromas of black cherry, bright red berries, and plums all lead into the barrel notes of toasty oak, vanilla, and smoky undertones. The palate entry opens smoothly and builds predictably with big, firm (but not coarse) tannin, good acid balance and lots of structure. There is a great progression from ripe, sweet cherry and plum fruit up-front to rich, dried black fruit and spice on the finish – with the vanilla and spice from the barrel layering in seamlessly. Chateau Montelena 2010 Cabernet Napa Valley

WA 92 Pts. - According to the Wine Advocate: A big, mouth filling wine, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, shows the personality of the vintage in its intense fruit. There is plenty of underlying structure in this deep, resonant Cabernet Sauvignon. Mint, flowers and sweet red berries are some of the nuances that are woven into the finish. This is far from an easygoing Napa Cabernet. Although delicious today, it should drink well for a number of years. Another year or so in bottle should help the elements come together even more fully. The 2010 is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

Winemaker Notes - This wine shows deep dense plum color with great density. The nose opens with anise and spice before moving into rich layers of blackberry and cherry compote. All that great concentrated fruit is beautifully complemented with barrel tones of vanilla and clove. It is quite youthful and lively on the palate with a good firm acid core - great for food pairing - and abundant velvety tannin. Complex layers of black fruits through the mid palate, with good barrel spice underlayment throughout, are nicely complemented by bright red fruit on the finish. rated 90+

Chateau Montelena 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Napa Valley

94 Pts IWC, 94 Pts AG, 91 Pts WA - Winemaker Notes - Deep, saturated color is just one of the hallmarks of our Estate Cabernet, and this inky purple beauty shows great intensity all the way to the edge of the glass. The nose is loaded with rich aromas of black fruits and spices. Notes of blackberry solicit memories of hot summer afternoons while clove, allspice, vanilla, and hints of cocoa tease with thoughts of baked goodies. Emerging from these layers is a core of brandied cherries, light oak, and a hint of anise. This wine shows a smooth entry that steadily builds to a full, fleshy mid-palate, then evolves seamlessly into a rich, spicy finish that invites you back for more. The black fruits from the nose are evident throughout the palate, and are complemented by lively, red fruit characteristics brought forward by the core of bright acidity. There are loads of fine grain tannins that give mass to the wine without being aggressively astringent, hinting at the delicacy and suppleness that will come with time in the cellar.

According to Antonio Galloni - The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is immediate, juicy and expressive in this vintage. At the same time, it seems pretty clear that the 2010 needs at least a few more years in bottle. Today, it is a bit disjointed as it is neither primary, nor showing too many tertiary notes or complexity. Sweet tobacco, leather, licorice, menthol and spices emerge over time, but the 2010 is a wine built for the cellar. There is plenty of density, but it needs time to emerge. rated 90+
