Chateau St. Jean 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County Cinq Cepages

WE 94pts. - Winemaker Notes - Cinq Cepages ('Five Varieties') is a Bordeaux-style blend consisting of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot. Each component is aged separately for two years in small French oak barrels (56% new) before blending. Once the wine is assembled, it spends six months in the bottle before release. Fruit for this Cabernet Sauvignon was selected from the finest Bordeaux variety vineyards in Sonoma County: 60% from Alexander Valley, 15% from Sonoma Valley, 15% from Knights Valley, 6% from Russian River Valley and 4% Dry Creek Valley to assemble a wine that showcases Sonoma County. The Alexander Valley grapes highlight bright berry with back notes of dried herbs, while the Sonoma Valley fruit is from the St. Jean Estate Vineyard, and brings black and dense mountain fruit to the blend. The Knights Valley fruit adds a firm mouthfeel and pronounced tannins and the Dry Creek Valley grapes tend toward dark, dense black cherry and berry fruit flavors with a rich mouthfeel. The Russian River Valley brings exotic aromas and lush textures to complete the blend. A classic Cinq Cepages, the 2003 vintage offers the signature chocolate-covered cherry and boysenberry aromas that have come to define this flagship Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon. Chateau St. Jean 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Cinq Cepages Sonoma County

WE 94 CG 93 WA 92 IWC 90 Pts - According to Wine Enthusiast - Another superb Cinq Cépages. A blend of all five classic Bordeaux grape varieties-, but based on Cabernet Sauvignon, it is both immediately pleasurable and intensely complex. Waves of black currants, dark chocolate, green olives, licorice and toasty oak roll across the palate, wrapped into firm, dusty tannins. Very good now but should develop further over the next 8–10 years. Cellar Selection!

According to Connoisseurs Guide - - As energetic as it is rich and loaded with very deep and long-lasting fruit that is enriched by beautifully matched oak, Chateau St. Jean's latest Cinq Cepages is a compelling, well-crafted opus that is hard not to like even now. That said, its early charms are exceeded by its long-term potential, and, however supple and juicy and inviting it may be at present, it has the structure and balance to age into better if cellared away.

According to Wine Advocate - The estate’s flagship 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Cinq Cepages is a wine mostly of promise at this stage. Mocha, espresso and savory herbs add nuance and complexity as this dark wine gradually unfurls in the glass. I see terrific depth and richness here, but readers will have to be patient. There is a lot going on here. A second bottle tasted in a complete vertical of Cinq Cepages came across as blend of 2007 and 2008, with a slight nod to the older vintage. The 2009 was impressive in that setting as well. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

According to Stephen Tanzer - Good full medium red. Inviting aromas of redcurrant, licorice, herbs, graphite and tobacco leaf, lifted by a peppery nuance. Suave, lively and fine-grained, with attractive inner-mouth perfume to the flavors of redcurrant, licorice, herbs and minerals. Juicy, firmly tannic wine with moderate ripeness but no shortage of energy or personality. Made in a rather subdued, traditional style, this blend should age gracefully.

Tasting Notes - The dense color of this wine highlights the rich, layered qualities found in the 2009 vintage. Aromas of boysenberry and cassis provide a bright fruit foundation to light floral and sweet milk chocolate notes. The palate finds more fullness of flavor in ripe blackberry and dark stone fruit, interwoven with black licorice and cocoa powder. The plush, full mouthfeel finds structure in well-integrated tannins and draws out to a consistent, lengthy finish. Rated 90

WA 90 Pts - According to Wine Advocate - Another drop-dead gorgeous wine, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley is beautiful. Sweet floral notes, licorice, red cherries and tobacco all flesh out in this layered Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2010 stands out for its sweet, silky tannins and hugely appealing personality. This is yet another highlight in a portfolio full of delicious wines. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.

This range from Chateau St. Jean is packed with values. Many of these wines, especially at the entry-level, are made in large enough production to be relatively easy to find. Chateau St. Jean 2010 Cinq Cepages Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County

WS 93 AG 92 WA 92 Pts - According to Wine Spectator - An authentic Bordeaux-style expression from Sonoma. Firm, dense and muscular, with a tight core of vivid blackberry, spice, cedar, loamy earth, black olive and cigar box notes, framed by tight, ripe, gripping tannins that extend the flavors. The finish impresses with purity, focus and complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Drink now through 2026.

According to Antonio Galloni - Dark plum, black cherries, licorice, smoke and new leather are all layered into the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Cinq Cepages. This is another huge, intense wine from Chateau St. Jean, but the flavors have a sense of brightness and cut that is not found in the 2009 Reserve reds, much of that coming from the higher acidity of the vintage. I would give the 2010 at least a few years in bottle. It has more than enough freshness to age well for a number of years. The cooler vintage balances some of the wine's more overt qualities nicely.

The 2009 was impressive in that setting as well. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

Winemakers Notes - The 2010 Cinq Cépages is a stunning color in the glass, deep ruby with a subtle violet colored rim. Layered aromas are vivid; black plum, blackberry compote, clove spice, tanned leather and a hint of fresh tobacco leaf. Secondary aromas of raspberry and spiced cherry mingle with notes of violet and pomegranate. The aromas lead to an incredibly juicy palate with flavors of blueberry, cherry and blackberry. Nuanced flavors of espresso and a distinct mocha component add to the complexity. The full-bodied wine has smooth, silky tannins that offer solid structure but do not overwhelm. Rated 90

Chateau Ste. Michelle 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Cold Creek Columbia Valley

WA 90pts. - According to the Wine Advocate: The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Cold Creek Vineyard is 100% Cabernet and was aged in 81% new oak. The brooding aromas deliver elements of pain grille, pencil lead, assorted black fruits, and plum. Firm and elegant, with ample spicy flavors, it will develop for 3-4 years and drink well from 2012 to 2020. Winemaker Notes - Cabernet from this 30-year-old vineyard always delivers power, structure and rich concentrated black fruit. I have tried to harness this power into something a little friendlier in the first few years of release, while not taking away from its inherent ability to age...literally wanting my cake and eating it too! Concentrated aromas of pomegranates, blueberries, cocoa and molasses lead to a rich mid-palate with loads of dark chocolate on the finish. Winemaker Notes - Planted by vineyard manager Mimi Nye in 1991, our vineyard at Canoe Ridge Estate has grown before our eyes to produce more concentrated and opulent wines. This wine shows amazing intensity to go with ripe black cherry fruit. The Canoe Ridge Estate Cab is a beautifully balanced wine that is a classic expression of Washington fruit. Tasting Notes - The Canoe Ridge Estate Cabernet delivers black cherry fruit, spicy oak, leather and sweet caramel characters. Its soft, elegant, slightly dusty finish is typical of Canoe Ridge Estate. This wine shows the more ‘subtle’ side of Washington Cabernet. It doesn’t hit you over the head, but rather gently entices you with seductive fruit and spice layers. Try this with penne pasta marinara or veal scaloppini. Those slightly ‘dusty Tuscan’ tannins are a great match with Italian foods.

A glass-coating opaque purple color, it is a brooding offering that reluctantly gives up notes of Asian spices, incense, cedar, leather, black currant, and blackberry. This sets the stage for a dense, layered, and structured wine with 3-4 years of aging potential. Drink this classy effort from 2014 to 2023.

According to Wine Spectator - Firm in texture, with chewy tannins around the core of tobacco-accented currant and floral flavors, finishing with finesse. Best from 2013 through 2016. 7,000 cases made.

According to Wine Enthusiast - Year in and year out, the Cold Creek Vineyard sources perhaps the most ageworthy, perfectly structured Cabernet in the entire Ste. Michelle portfolio. In 2008 the alcohol hits 15%, yet the tight, dense, cassis-laden body of the wine is intact, with an appropriate hint of herb. The length and balance once again suggest a wine that has decades of life ahead.

Winemakers Notes - Cabernet from this iconic 35-year-old vineyard always delivers power, structure and rich concentrated black fruit. This is a dense wine with great aging potential. This vintage is nearly pure Cabernet (99%) with intense dark fruit and long finish. I call this my steakhouse red! Rated 90

Chateau Ste. Michelle 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley

WE 90 Pts - Editor's Choice! - According to Wine Enthusiast - This is a splendid rendition of Chateau Ste. Michelle’s mainstay Cabernet, rich and round, with a sophisticated mix of grapes, including Malbec, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot and Syrah. Dark fruit flavors of black cherry and cassis create a lush center, and the wine is more evolved and smoother, with less obvious oak and barrel flavor, than the pricier Cabs from Ste. Michelle.

Tasting Notes - Our goal with the Columbia Valley Cabernet is to highlight concentrated Washington red fruit in an accessible style. This is our inviting Cab with plenty of complexity and structure with silky tannins.

Last tasted by me in its finished blend shortly before bottling, Ste Michelle’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Cold Creek Vineyard combines plushness of texture and depth of flavor (dark berries, tobacco, chocolate) with welcome vivacity and saliva-inducing salinity. It should offer fine value over the next half dozen or more years.

Chateau Ste. Michelle 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley

According to Wine Spectator - Polished, open-textured and distinctive, with a minty edge to the currant and plum fruit, lingering easily on the soft finish.

According to Wine Enthusiast - CSM’s mainstream Cabernet Sauvignon now carries a “100% vinifera rootstock” designation—surely a first for any American winery. It displays more structure than some of the other, similarly priced offerings from the Northwest’s largest winery group. With good focus and length, its mix of plum and berry fruit, nicely set in a frame of toast, coffee and charred wood.

Tasting Notes - We craft our Columbia Valley Cabernet to highlight concentrated Washington red fruit in an accessible style. This is an inviting Cab with plenty of complexity and structure with silky tannins. It’s also very versatile with food. I like this wine with beef tenderloin and pasta. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% MErlot, 4% Syrah, 2% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot, 2% Mourvedre. 13.5% ABV.
