Product Description

V95 Vinous / Antonio Galloni - "The 2013 Pinot Noir de Villiers Vineyard is intense, pure and brilliant. Dark red cherry, blood orange, lavender, mint, star anise and wild flowers give the de Villiers an exotic edge in this vintage. Plush and deep on the palate, the 2013 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Sweet floral and red-fleshed fruits add freshness on the finish. Today, the De Villiers is sublime, but it also needs time to fully come together. "

Vineyards: Calera’s vineyards soar at an average of 2200 feet above sea level and are cooled by the direct flow of cold marine air off the Pacific Ocean through the Monterey Bay coast, towards the upper elevations of the Gavilan Mountain range and Mt. Harlan. The elevation further moderates the climate in what many expect would be a hot growing region reducing the temperature about three degrees for every 1000 feet of height in elevation.

History: named for Marq de Villiers, author of the Heartbreak grape, the story of Josh’s creation of Calera

Style: Showy and forward with chewy and juicy fruit character, and a rich, lush round mouthfeel

    Needs time, tannic and astringent

Full review on CellarTracker. Wine is considerably more tannic than expected (more than 2012 Mills), with less complexity and nuances of flavor. A poor sign was from 2d night drinking - too tannic and astringent to bother with, into the sink. This was a real disappointment basis the reviews and scores. The wine will likely come around but isn't interesting enough for me to hold in temperature controlled storage to wait (do wait ... drank a 2007 Swan Trenton a week ago). 2013 is a more tannic vintage, lesser from my samplings, but there are wines more balanced. Average, full bodied PN for slightly premium price.

Thanks to Napacabs for being an excellent seller.
