95 Points Wine Enthusiast: "In a good vintage, which it was, Silverado’s Solo bottling is always worthy of aging. It would be a tragedy to open this 100% Cabernet before 2018, and even then it might be too early. Dry and full bodied, this offers complex blackberry and cassis flavors, with a grounding herbal quality suggestive of sage. The tannins are profound, making the wine tight now. Cellar Selection."
WINEMAKER NOTES: After two challenging growing seasons, 2012 came like a gift from above. Very little rain, mild to warm temperatures, and a long, temperate Indian summer, made for fully developed fruit and plenty of density with a muscular – yet streamlined – build. We were able to thoughtfully harvest the fruit from our small vineyard over the course of nearly six weeks. The resulting wines are soft, rich and seamless, with each of our four varieties singing in perfect harmony.
The 2012 Mad Hatter is youthful, forward, and expressive. The wine is ebullient with pure, uninhibited fruit aromas—black cherry, plum, strawberry—as well as baking spices and kirsch, which add a lift and exciting fragrance. On the palate, there is a roundness and polish that make the wine accessible and wholly enjoyable immediately, even without decanting. There is certainly enough density and structure for the wine to age for ten or more years; however, there is significant enjoyment to be had right away.
