Though Champagne is the most well-known sparkling wine, California has a long, illustrious history with the effervescent beverage. It originally began when California wine makers were trying to create their own version of the classic drink and found that the California terroir created a delicious and unique sparkling wine. Using mostly Chardonnay grapes, with some Pinot Noir thrown in for flavor and structure, Domestic sparkling wine ranges in style and characteristic, from slightly sweet to dry and can have varying levels of bubble. Domestic sparkling wine is quickly catching up to Champagne in reputation and quality, if it hasn’t surpassed its French predecessor already.
