Wine & Spirits Review
Rated 100
The old terraces the Graham family built at Malvedos follow the contours of the hillside. While most of the quinta's 220 acres of vines have a southerly view, the old vines on the stone terraces bend around the hill to face north. In 2017, by separating out that north-facing block, Charles Symington created one of the most compelling Ports in the history of Graham's, a wine that shares the classical certainty of the first Graham's Vintage made by the Symington family: his uncle James's 1970, updated to the precision of viticulture and the long odds of the 21st-century climate. It's an olfactory hallucination of Douro Superior sweetness in the pure minor key of Malvedos - like sour black cherries amplified and deepened into an identifiable perfume, the tartness of the fruit and the schist of the tannins layering in a resonant chord. It tastes as if the fruit of the Douro's olive trees, orange trees and deep-rooted mix of vines have merged into a form of energy, with an impeccable balance that should sustain it for fifty years or longer.

CELLAR SELECTION

Rich tannins are balanced by the ripe blackberry fruits in this beautifully layered wine. Its acidity shines through enough for the intensely structured fruit and tannins to promise great aging potential. It is a fine wine that will be ready from 2028.

Packed with juicy, bramble-laced black currant, açaí berry and fig notes, this features the vivid fruit and energy of the vintage. Graphite and tar flavors score the finish, giving this terrific cut and extra drive. Seriously long, with the fruit staying very persistent. This is built for the long haul and has a bit of a regal feel. Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. Best from 2035 through 2060.

The 2017 The Stone Terraces Vintage Port, from a specific plot, is predominantly Touriga Nacional. It comes in with 117 grams of residual sugar and was bottled about a month before this tasting after 18 months in seasoned oak vats. However, this was a pre-bottling sample, as the bottled sample was not quite ready to taste. I was - relatively - unimpressed with the first pour of this. The second pour was silk for texture coupled with pure power. This is relatively elegant in the mid-palate, but the muscle is very old-school. It is not jammy, but it is remarkably concentrated as well. Drink 2035-2085.

Wine Tasting Notes
Graham's 'The Stone Terraces' 2017 Vintage Port has a deep purple color, so concentrated as to be opaque, with a delightful aroma of orange blossom and peach. Opulent, silky smooth, yet concentrated black fruit flavors seduce the palate. Schist tannins reveal a beautifully sculpted structure, the lovely acidity giving effortless balance. A sublime, inspirational wine.
