WA 92 IWC 90 Pts - According to Wine Advocate - "The 2006 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Vigneto Santa Pia is rather dark and closed in on itself at this stage. Red cherries, pipe tobacco, earthiness and minerals emerge over time, but only reluctantly. The Santa Pia remains a touch firm and unyielding with a Nebbiolo-like intensity on the taut, wiry finish. This needs to be opened at least 30 minutes in advance to allow for some of the wilder notes in the bouquet to dissipate. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022."
According to International Wine Cellar - "Dark ruby. Very ripe aromas of balsamic black plum, coffee and cocoa syrup. Mouthfilling black cherry liqueur and dark chocolate flavors are impressively vibrant for such a concentrated wine, taking on a brighter red berry quality on the finish. This hangs around on the palate long after you've swallowed, leaving behind strong echoes of black pepper and underbrush on the very ripe and smooth merlot-dominated finish. I've never been a fan of this wine, but am happy to report that this is the best young S. Pia I remember."
Tasting Notes - "With a vivid and intense red color, on the nose Santa Pia 2006 demonstrates all of its complexity, with intense aromas of ripe fruit well combined with vanilla hints deriving from wood contact. On the palate the wine is very smooth and enveloping, with soft tannins in the finish and aftertaste which leaves nice minerality and persistence in the mouth." 14.5% ABV.
