Zinfandel

Zinfandel

With the highest alcohol content of any red wine on the market, Zinfandel was made famous by California due to the hot, sunny climate which gives Zinfandel a jammy, fruity characteristic. Though Zinfandel was widely planted in California by the 1800’s, the true origins of the grape remained a mystery until recent times. Back then it was widely believed that Zinfandel was simply a native grape to the U.S., until an American professor traveled to Italy in the 1960’s and noticed similarities to the primitivo grape. Later, through DNA testing it was confirmed that Zinfandel was not only genetically identical to primitivo, but that both grapes are identical to an ancient Croatian grape called Crljenak Kaštelanski.
