The Rhône is the name of a river in France that passes through the Alps and flows south towards the Mediterranean Sea. The French wine region that sits on its banks is known as the Rhône Valley. The grape varietals grown in this area include Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Viognier. These grapes are usually simply called Rhône grapes. Any wine made from these grapes is referred to as a “Rhône-style” wine. The taste of a wine from this region can vary depending on the grape that it is based on, and even the location inside of the region. Northern Rhône whites made using Viognier are full-bodied and aromatic, while becoming extremely creamy when oak-aged.
