The 2022 Batch 142 The House Cabernet is sourced from various Napa AVAs and aged in a mix of 50% neutral French oak and 50% predominantly new American oak from Minnesota, on the 46th parallel—the same latitude as the forests of France. Malek notes that while the grain size is similar to American oak from elsewhere in the country, the wood itself is different, imparting aromatics he finds cleaner. The wine is nicely balanced, with sweet spice, red and black cherry and blackberry fruit, building into medium-bodied richness. Sappy tannins frame the palate, leading to a finish of spiced plums. Once again, the consistency of flavour and texture is impressive. Drinking Window 2025-2035.

The Virtue would be a more fitting name for this well-balanced, lively and deep red. A harmonious combo of raspberry and red-cherry aromas is followed by a fresh-textured palate, moderate tannins and rather bright, focused fruit flavors. Drink now or hold.
